What I really wanted from this program is to get an idea of how CONTENTdm collections can be integrated with WorldCat which was covered in the first part. But I missed that. I was only able to catch the second part of this program where Geri Ingram demonstrated how to import, load and search fully searchable digital collections. As examples, she used a 1967 yearbook of a fellow OCLC staff, a handwritten postcard and a book about bridges from LeHigh U's digital collections. This last one was converted from a Greenstone Digital Collection to a ContentDM collection [see LeHigh's Digital Bridges].
This program is really geared for those who are already using CONTENTdm but I registered and attended anyway because I expect it to be relevant to the Metadata Management Librarian position that I recently accepted with the University of Oregon libraries but which I will not start until mid-August. I'm especially interested that one could use a metadata field for fully-searchable text - this opens up a lot of possibilities for enhancing the user's search experience.

The session took up 5 Pavilion rooms at the Marriot and it was justifiably filled. The handouts were gone by the time I got there. I was told that the hotel wouldn't give the code for wireless access so I couldn't pull out the online program description to remember who was speaking up front.
The speaker was Michael Schrage...Will finish this post later. Gotta run to another session at another hotel.

Ebook Workflows: Selection to Access

By the time I got to this session, several people were already splunked on the floor or standing by the walls. So, ebooks must be causing headaches to attract this big an audience. I counted 13 rows, 14 chairs each times 2 sides so that's about 400 people. I grabbed a chair from the other room and started taking notes.
Aline Soules of the California State University, East Bay was in the middle of her presentation when I got there. She set the stage for defining what an ebook is and what users want. Most of it is online at http://libresos.pbwiki.com/Ebkwkflows.
Next speaker was Laura Wrubel of the U of Maryland, College Park. Her presentation was titled Learning to Sail Together: Adventures with E-books in a Consortial Setting. Difficult to integrate workflows at the consortial level - challenges with regard to ebook uptake, access and discovery: pricing models, licensing issues, identifiers, etc. These have been talked about for a few years now. The need for consistent consortial models is evidently still up in the air. Laura ended her slides with a quote from a Bertha Calloway: We cannot direct the wind but we can adjust the sails.
Next speaker: Michael Walmsley from YBP Library Services. He tells his audience they won't get a PowerPoint from him. Michael rambled mostly about the separation of print and ebook workflows - the challenges that libraries face to keep long-established print workflows and adopt new ones geared toward e-content. Booksellers can help with their tools for duplication detection, electronic invoicing, approvals plans, tech services - nothing that you don't already know. Michael did show a slide of his angelic one-year old daughter with a pile of books pulled out from a bookshelf. Books are here to stay, Michael assures his audience.
Well, I had to leave. Somebody from Coutts is next to speak but I was getting the sense that I wasn't going to get any new information about ebooks that I already don't know. I focused on ebooks while I was at Blackwell (why don't they present at this sessions?) so I feel like my brain is actually drowning with ebook info that I still need to process into some actionable forms.
